RetaiI: Important for jobs and economic growth
Across the nation, retail is critical to economic success because consumer spending drives our economy. According to the National Retail Federation:
• 1 in 4 U.S. jobs is in the retail sector.
• 42 million retail jobs provide $2.5 trillion each year.
• Retail is a daily barometer of the nation’s economic health.
Ventura County’s retail sector provides 34,500 local jobs, making it an integral part of the local economy’s vitality. Retail jobs also pave the way for upward mobility for workers at all levels. To keep our local economy strong, we need to keep our retail sector thriving.
Leasure and hospitality: a bright spot in local economy
The leisure and hospitality sectors play a critical role in Ventura County’s ability to attract visitors and employers that pay high-end wages. From restaurants, catering and recreation to hotels, arts and entertainment, these areas within leisure and hospitality are key for the county:
• Leisure and hospitality jobs rose 6.6 percent from January 2010 to July 2011,from 29,500 to 31,600 jobs.
• Jobs in arts, entertainment and recreation continue to be particularly strong.
• With wage rates and salaried employment in the hospitality industry expected to rise up to 17 percent through 2014, Ventura County is well-positioned for job growth in this sector.
When these businesses are robust, they attract visitors. Visitors spend money, which allows businesses to hire more local residents and stimulate the local economy.
