Capacity Building Initiative

The Capacity Building Initiative expands technical assistance and training opportunities for Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) nationwide, and significantly boosts their ability to deliver financial products and services to underserved communities. Under the Initiative, industry-wide training targets key issues currently affecting CDFIs and the communities they serve. The CDFI Fund has engaged established community development firms to provide training and technical assistance to address the following issues: foreclosure prevention, portfolio management, risk assessment, liquidity assistance and capitalization challenges, affordable housing and business lending, and training in CDFI business processes.

NeighborWorks® America provides the Foreclosure Solution series. This series helps participating CDFIs improve their understanding of foreclosure intervention counseling and how to effectively implement a counseling program in their communities.

NeighborWorks® America provides the Portfolio Management series. This series will help participating CDFIs improve their capacity to manage their portfolios, including assessing and reducing portfolio risk.

NeighborWorks® America provides the CDFI Capitalization series, which helps participating CDFIs learn strategies and techniques for increasing their capitalization and improving their liquidity.

NeighborWorks® America provides The Leadership Journey: Native CDFI Growth and Excellence series, which offers the forum, tools, and resources for Native CDFI leaders to identify and address the critical challenges of their organizations.

Opportunity Finance Network provides the Financing Healthy Food Options series to support CDFIs engaged in the eradication of food deserts in their Target Markets.

Business Eligibility for CDFI Programs: Eligibility for the financial products and services offered by Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) is determined by each CDFI based on the needs of the targeted communities and populations that they serve. CDFI Entity Eligibility for Development Programs: All Native CDFIs are eligible to apply to participate in the Leadership Journey: Native CDFI Growth and Excellence series. Under the Financing Healthy Food Options series, training workshops are available to certified and emerging CDFIs. Two people per CDFI may attend the training workshops. Under the CDFI Capitalization series, the Portfolio Management series, and the Foreclosure Solution series, training and technical assistance opportunities will be made available to certified and emerging CDFIs.
