Sison Date, time, time zone for call: Wednesday, January 29, 2014; 8:00 a.m. EST (6:30 p.m. local) Deadline for RSVPs: Friday, January 24, 2014 Brief description of call: Embassy Colombo’s second Direct Line webinar will discuss the opportunities for U.S. companies interested in exporting medical devices to Sri Lanka. Ambassador Sison will be joined by industry experts and the Commercial Attache. Join Embassy Colombo to learn about the methodology of government medical device purchases, how to respond to tenders, and why medical devices should be registered. The Sri Lankan Government provides free universal healthcare. Although private sector involvement in healthcare is growing rapidly, 90% of Sri Lankans continue to seek medical treatment at government-run hospitals. Therefore, the Government of Sri Lanka is the largest buyer of medical devices. Sri Lanka’s proposed (2013/2014) budget for healthcare has increased significantly from last year. The government wants to focus on diagnosis and prevention of non-communicable diseases, as well as making Sri Lanka a regional hub for medical tourism. What is a medical device? For the purpose of the webinar, the Government of Sri Lanka defines medical devices as any article, instrument, accessory or component manufactured or sold for use in: The diagnosis, treatment, mitigation or prevention of disease, disorder or abnormal physical state; Restoring, correcting, or modifying a body function or the body structure; The diagnosis of pregnancy; or The care during pregnancy, at birth, after birth.
