The speakers will offer their views on unique advantages that Latvia offers foreign investors. As experienced investors and entrepreneurs in Latvia, Demarest and Shore will share their first-hand knowledge and hints for U.S. businesses seeking to enter the Latvian market. The four sessions will be held consecutive Wednesday evenings from 5pm to 7pm. beginning April 10, 2013. As part of the course, you will receive an overview of DC's employment laws as they apply to small businesses, including: Hiring, Firing, and Performance Management; Employee Compensation and Classification; Wage and Hour Laws; Distinction between Employees and Independent Contractors; and Employment Discrimination

The course will be taught by employment law experts with experience dealing with small businesses. It is designed for sole proprietors, members of business partnerships, general managers and owners of LLCs. The sessions will take place at the offices of Crowell & Moring, 1001 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. (One block from Metro Center on the Red, Blue and Orange lines.) There is a $25 charge for the series to cover the cost of materials. Participants will receive a certificate of completion for from the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program, DC SBDC and the DSLBD.

This is the 3rd Section of our Small Business Venture Training series and is intended to facilitate the writing of the finance section of a business plan and includes using income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements. Students will learn how to project and evaluate the financial performance of their small business. OPIC will continue its popular Expanding Horizons series for small businesses in 2014, with four events around the country. These workshops and seminars help educate small businesses about the benefits of expanding into emerging markets, and the tools available from OPIC and other U.S. Government agencies that can support them. Expanding Horizons workshops are day-long events featuring presentations by OPIC, the U.S. Small Business Administration, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, the U.S. Department of Commerce, including the U.S. Commercial Service and the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), and the Export-Import Bank of the U.S., as well as one-on-one meetings with OPIC representatives. Seminars are half-day events undertaken in cooperation with a local partner organization. The 2014 Expanding Horizons schedule includes: Minneapolis, MN - April 2 Workshop Phoenix, AZ - May 22 Workshop Orlando, FL - June 26 Workshop Trenton, NJ - TBD Seminar OPIC launched Expanding Horizons in 2006 as a way of reaching out to the country’s small businesses, which are often the businesses that need the most support expanding into challenging, high-growth markets abroad. These workshops and seminars have educated more than 2,500 small and medium-sized business owners across the United States about OPIC’s finance and political risk insurance products. In 2013, U.S. small businesses accounted for close to two-thirds of all the new projects to which OPIC committed financing or insurance.
