The South Eastern Economic Development (SEED) Corporation will hold free basic business workshops throughout the region this fall/winter aimed at assisting potential and existing entrepreneurs. The workshopsare co-sponsored by local banks and credit unions, the Small Business Development Center Network, local community and economic development organizations, chambers of commerce, SCORE and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

The first of these workshops entitled "Learn the Fundamentals in Planning, Preparing and Financing Your Business" is geared toward helping potential entrepreneurs evaluate and understand the fundamentals of owning one's own business. Information on how to get started, where and how to get financing and the loan application process will be presented. Attendees will also be provided with a free guide to writing a business plan and other materials.

The second workshop entitled "Understanding the Purpose of Financial Statements and How They Can Help Determine the Health of Your Business" is focused on helping attendees understand a balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement. The workshop also explains how a small business owner can anticipate financial needs in order to operate his/her business more efficiently.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided free of charge to attendees.

The Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) Federal Contract program authorizes contracting officers to set aside certain federal contracts for eligible; women-owned small businesses (WOSBs) or economically disadvantaged women-owned small businesses (EDWOSBs).

To be eligible, a firm must be at least 51% owned and controlled by one or more women, and primarily managed by one or more women. The women must be U.S. citizens. The firm must be small in its primary industry in accordance with SBAs size standards for that industry. In order for a WOSB to be deemed economically disadvantaged, its owners must demonstrate economic disadvantage in accordance with the requirements set forth in the final rule.

At the workshop, contracting experts will address the initial criteria for certification, highlight tips on how to complete the electronic application, and provide useful strategies on how to market in the federal contracting arena.

All SBA programs and cosponsored programs are extended to the public on a nondiscriminatory basis. Reasonable arrangements for persons will disabilities will be made, if requested, at least 2 weeks in advance.
