The Office of Enrollment and Discipline provides the American public and patent holders with assurance that patent attorneys and agents conducting business before the Office will uphold and maintain the utmost ethical standards. The OED administers the Examination for Registration to Practice in Patent Cases Before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, keeps a roster of registered attorneys and agents, investigates grievances against attorneys or agents for unethical conduct, and initiates disciplinary proceedings against attorneys and agents in appropriate circumstances. Patent attorneys and agents who have passed the examination are registered to practice before the Office. The OED keeps a public roster of registered attorneys and agents. OED develops the exam which is administered each business day to determine if applicants for registration have the necessary knowledge of patent law and practice to assist applicants for patents.OED investigates grievances alleging unethical conduct by registered patent attorneys and agents, as well as attorneys practicing before the USPTO in trademark cases (collectively "practitioners").
